Bank charges soar in five years, ING is the most expensive
The cost of having a traditional bank account has almost doubled over the past five years, with ING leading the way, the consumers campaign group Consumentenbond said on Wednesday.
The fees to have an ING account have gone up from €18.60 to €43.80 per year, for the standard option with one direct debit card, the organisation said. Five years ago, ING was one of the cheapest options.
Today, ASN Bank, with an annual fee of €32.40 per year offers the cheapest deal. The Consumentenbond compared the fees of the nine Dutch banks now and in 2019.
“For years banks have blamed low interest rates, and the cost of innovation and anti-money laundering measures, for the high charges, said director Sandra Molenaar.
“In the meantime, interest rates have risen and the Dutch central bank has developed standards which the banks can use for researching risks. As far as I am concerned, that should be it with the sharp rises.”
