Amsterdam’s blue-chip index tops 830 points, sets new record
Amsterdam stock exchange’s blue-chip AEX index set a new record on Tuesday morning, topping 830 points in early trading. The previous record was set in November 2021.
The AEX started this year at 786.82 points and has risen 5.5% since then, led by chip machinery makers, the Financieele Dagblad reported. ASML, which has a 20% weighting in the AEX, has risen more than 20% this year, while Besi and ASM, both rose sharply in 2023.
The positive sentiment is partly down to hopes that central banks will start lowering interest rates in the coming weeks and share prices have been rising steadily across Europe since October.
Interest rates rose sharply in 2022 in an effort to quell inflation.
