A nine-year-old girl has died after falling through ice while riding across a frozen field on a quad bike with her father.

The father and daughter both ended up in freezing water when the ice gave way beneath the vehicle in Landgraaf, Limburg, at around 1.45pm on Sunday.

The girl was rescued from beneath the ice by firefighters and taken to hospital, but police said on Monday she had died from her injuries.

Her father managed to make his own way out of the ice. Police did not release any information about his state of health.

“We will not be making any further statements out of respect for the family,” a spokesman said.
