The KNMI weather bureau has issued a code yellow weather warning for coastal parts of the Netherlands, saying snow may fall in places and the roads are likely to be slippery because of the sub zero temperatures.

Large parts of Europe have been hit by heavy snowfall on Saturday, and Munich airport has been closed, leading to the cancellation of more than 700 flights.

Snow is also causing problems in Austria and Switzerland, where up to 50 centimetres of snow fell on Friday night. Parts of England and Scotland are also experiencing wintry conditions.

The KNMI weather bureau said snow showers will move into coastal parts of the Netherlands on Saturday evening and there may be snow flurries over much of the country on Sunday.

The best chance of the snow sticking will be in the northern provinces, where there could be up to five centimetres, forecaster Weeronline said. There may also be occasional sunny spells at times.

More snow is possible on Monday but the temperature will then begin to rise and the snow will give way to rain, the KNMI said.
