New look parliament is sworn in, with 67 new faces
The new look parliament was sworn in on Wednesday, with 67 debutants in the 150 seat lower house.
In total, there are 80 new faces in parliament, but 13 of the new intake were previously MPs. Seven are ministers in the current cabinet and two are in the senate.
The new lower house has more MPs from the regions and more manual workers but is less culturally diverse than the previous one, according to research by Trouw.
New MPs include a supermarket manager, a poffertjes stand owner and a metal worker, and the number of MPs with trade school qualifications rather than a degree will almost double to 19, Trouw found. This is largely down to the surge in MPs from far right party PVV.
There will be 89 men, 60 women and one non-binary person in the 150-seat parliament which is roughly in line with 2021.
In total, 15 parties have won a seat in parliament, but seven of them have three or fewer MPs.
Just one potential MP has won a seat on preference votes. Daniëlle Hirsch from the left-wing green alliance will replace Luc Stultiens who was 25th on the party’s list.
However, given that sitting GroenLinks MP Kauthar Bouchallikht already said she would not take her seat because of divisions over the party’s policy on Palestine, Stultiens will probably keep his place.
