NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt “strongly prefers” to remain an MP
NSC campaign leader Pieter Omtzigt, who is currently slightly ahead in the opinion polls, has said he would “strongly prefer” to stay in the lower house of parliament rather than become prime minister.
Omtzigt was questioned again about his plans on television talk show Op1 on Thursday evening and said that he hoped this statement would give clarity about his hopes for the premiership.
“If [other party leaders] want certainty, then this is what they are getting,” he said. “My preference” has been to remain in parliament for a long time.
Who would become prime minister on behalf of the party if it wins the election on November 22 has yet to be decided, he said, adding that it would be unlikely to be someone from a “smaller coalition party”.
The latest poll of polls puts the NSC on 25 to 31 seats, the VVD on 26 to 30 and the GroenLinks/PvdA alliance on 21 to 25.
