Youngsters who dumped baby in waste container jailed
A young couple who dumped their newly born baby in an underground rubbish container and were later discovered to have killed another child have been sentenced to 15 months in juvenile detention, followed by compulsory psychiatric treatment.
Sentencing the couple, who were minors at the time, the court described the facts of the case as “shocking”, and referred several times to their refusal to talk about the case.
Baby Naomi, as she came be known, was heard crying in container in Holendrecht in Amsterdam Zuidoost by a woman who wanted to drop off her own waste. The emergency services managed to rescue the baby, who had been put in a plastic Jumbo supermarket bag. She survived.
A cash receipt in the bag led police to the youngsters, who were both 17 at the time. They told the police at the time they thought the baby was dead.
During the investigation police discovered that the teenager had given birth two years earlier and eventually the body of another baby was found buried in the garden of a place where they used to live.
The couple, now both 20, were sentenced as juveniles because they were under the age of 18 at the time of their crimes.
