Feyenoord beat Lazio 3-1 to top Champions League group
A 3-1 home win against Italian club Lazio put Rotterdam club Feyenoord at the top of Champions League Group E after three games on Thursday evening.
Santiago Gimenez, suspended for the first two games of the tournament, stole the show with the first and final goals with Ramiz Zerrouki picking up the second shortly before the break.
Coach Arne Slot told reporters afterward that he is “extremely happy” with the win. “It is a very fine victory after playing Atletico Madrid away.” The Rotterdammers lost that game 3-2 despite putting in what pundits said was a very strong performance.
Speaking after the game, 22-year-old winger Calvin Stengs said there is still growth in the club. “We still have at least three Champions League games to go,” he said. “I don’t think anyone in the squad is at the peak of their game. We are going to grow and see where we end up.”
Ajax and AZ are both in action in European football on Thursday evening. Ajax meet Brighton away in their Europa League Group B fixture while AZ is at home to Aston Villa in the Conference League.
