A 31-year-old trainee soldier has died after falling unwell during military exercises at the Oranjekazerne barracks in Gelderland.

The man was given first aid after becoming ill at the start of the exercise on Monday, before being taken to hospital where he died on Tuesday, the defence ministry said.

The cause of the soldier’s death is unclear. Military police have begun an investigation.

The Dutch army said in a statement that his family and colleagues had been informed.

The Oranjekazerne barracks in Schaarsbergen, near Arnhem, are the headquarters of the 11 Air Assault Brigade, a rapid deployment infantry division. Since being formed in 1992 it has seen action in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Mali.
