Plan to restrict sales of cheap homes downed by PVV u-turn
A u-turn by the far right PVV means plans to allow local authorities to impose income checks on people who want to buy existing homes costing under €355,000 are now unlikely to go ahead.
Coalition parties VVD and D66 had already made their opposition to the idea clear, and with the support of the PVV and other parties on the right, there is no majority in favour. MPs are due to vote on the proposals next week.
“The PVV is opposed to allowing local councils to decide who you can sell your home to,” MP Alexander Kops said on Twitter on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday the PVV had backed the measure during a parliamentary debate.
Housing minister Hugo de Jonge also wants to allow local authorities to reserve half of the current rental and owner-occupied housing within their boundaries for locals or people with an “essential job” such as teachers, police officers and nursing staff. This too is now unlikely to happen.
However, other parts of the legislation, such as setting income thresholds for new homes and restricting a percentage of new properties to locals or people in essential professions, are likely to win majority support in next week’s vote.
