Limburg is first province to reach coalition accord with BBB
Limburg had become the first of the 12 Dutch provinces to achieve an accord with pro-farmers party BBB, in the wake of the March 15 provincial government elections.
The Limburg coalition is made up of the BBB plus the right wing liberal VVD, Christian Democrats, Labour party and the Socialists. The names of the provincial deputies will be announced later on Friday.
Together, the coalition parties control 26 of the 47 seats on the provincial council.
The BBB emerged as the biggest party in every province but its position on cutting nitrogen emissions and closing farms – key tasks for the provincial councils – has had an impact on its role in forming regional governments.
In May, the BBB dropped out of talks to form a provincial government in Utrecht after a proposed seven-party coalition fell apart in less than a day.
But the party is likely to be included in the Noord Holland coalition, alongside environmentalist party GroenLinks.
The two parties hold diametrically opposing views on key issues such as the buyout of farms to meet emissions targets and renewable energy, but their local leaders have said they were prepared to make compromises.
The VVD and the Labour party (PvdA) are also likely to be part of the Noord-Holland coalition.
Coalitions with the BBB are also on the cards in Friesland and Zeeland.
