Customs discovered fake products worth €53m
Dutch customs officials intercepted €53 million-worth of fake goods in 2022, almost double the 2020 total.
In total, some 1.6 million products were discovered, the customs service told broadcaster NOS, confirming figures from television crime show Het Misdaadbureau.
Lego building blocks and fluffy animals brand Huggy Wuggy were copied most often, as well as medication like Viagra. Bags, watches, and phone accessories were also among the intercepted items, along with fake beauty products, including potentially dangerous Botox substitutes.
The trade in fake products also increased during the Covid crisis when online shopping boomed, officials said.
