Dutch News isn’t signing up for costly Twitter certification
Dutch News is set to lose its Twitter blue tick certificate on Thursday because of new rules drawn up by company owner Elon Musk to raise money with the social media service.
As a small company, Dutch News would be faced with paying €1,000 a month for certification, which represents a large chunk of our budget. All our income, from advertising and donations, goes to providing and improving our news service and will continue to do so.
The so-called blue check was introduced to verify notable accounts and prevent impersonation. We applied for verification after discovering that several accounts on Twitter were scraping our content and posting it to the social media platform, pretending to be Dutch News. Our official account is @DutchNewsNL and that will not change.
We also see Twitter as a public service and an integral part of our output and we will continue to post all our news there. We may shortly have no blue tick, but in that respect, nothing will alter.
If you want to have Dutch News permanently on your phone, you can easily include the mobile website in your favourites. Just go to www.dutchnews.nl on your mobile and save.
If you follow Dutch News on your mobile, be aware that we do not currently have an app, and apps you might see claiming to provide Dutch news are nothing to do with us.
You can, however, follow Dutch News on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn as well as on Twitter. We host a weekly podcast which looks at the week’s events. And if you would like to receive a digest of the top five stories on a daily basis, sign up for our newsletter.
Thank you for donating to DutchNews.nl.
We could not provide the Dutch News service, and keep it free of charge, without the generous support of our readers. Your donations allow us to report on issues you tell us matter, and provide you with a summary of the most important Dutch news each day.
