Judges have reopened the investigation into Netherlands international footballer Quincy Promes, who is accused of stabbing his nephew at a family party.

The 31-year-old has been on trial in Amsterdam over the incident, which happened in Abcoude in July 2020. Promes is alleged to have attacked his nephew after suspecting him of stealing a necklace from his aunt.

The district court did not say why the case was being reopened, but an interim judgment will be issued on Friday instead of the full verdict. The prosecution had asked for a two-year jail sentence.

Promes was not in court for the trial, having been sold by Ajax to Spartak Moscow for €8 million two months after the incident. He has played 50 times for the Dutch national team and is currently top scorer in Russia’s Premyer Liga.

Russian media reported in January that he had applied for citizenship in the country, which would make him immune from extradition, but the player’s lawyer Robert Malewicz said he was not planning to give up his Dutch nationality.
