Tourist numbers back to pre-pandemic levels, more staycations
Tourism numbers have almost recovered to pre-pandemic levels after two years when bookings were restricted by lockdown.
Latest figures from the statistics agency CBS showed 44.4 million visitors stayed in holiday accommodation in 2022, up from 31.7 million the previous year, a rise of 40%.
In 2019 a total of 45.9 million visitors were recorded. More holidays were booked by tourists from the Netherlands in 2022, while foreign visitor numbers rebounded from 2021 but were still down on pre-pandemic levels.
A total of 127.6 million nights were booked by travellers, a 26% increase from last year and 4% more than in 2019.
Hotels were the most popular form of accommodation, though bookings were slightly lower than in 2019, with 28.5 million people staying in hotels compared to 30.5 million three years ago. However, holiday parks and campsites both recorded higher visitor numbers.
