Police have arrested three men suspected of kidnapping a 15-year-old boy and driving him away in a van.

Officers stopped the vehicle on the A27 near Utrecht and released the boy, after witnesses saw him being bundled into the vehicle outside a flat in the Tweede Jan Steenstraat in Amsterdam on Tuesday morning.

A 36-year-old man from Weesp, a 35-year-old from Amsterdam and a man aged 29 from Almere were arrested. The motorway was briefly closed during the operation, during which warning shots were fired.

The boy was physically unharmed during his ordeal, police said. The three suspects have been detained in custody and are only permitted contact with their lawyer.

Police are investigating the motive for the abduction and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
