By 2040, one in four people in the Netherlands will be over 65
The population of the Netherlands is on target to reach 20.7 million people by 2070, crossing the 18 million mark in 2024, national statistics office CBS said on Friday.
The population will increase in size as people live longer and via migration, the CBS said. By 2040, one in four people will be over the age of 65.
The population is set to grow relatively quickly in the coming years, but that will slow as time moves on and deaths outstrip births.
The Netherlands now has a population of around 17.8 million, and grew by 227,000 this year – although a large part of that was down to people arriving from Ukraine following the outbreak of war.
EU and Asian nationals account for most of the rest.
Immigration will slow in the coming years, the CBS said.
