PSV Eindhoven are contesting a €20,000 fine by the KNVB for anti-Semitic chanting during the pre-season Johan Cruyff Shield match against Ajax.

The club accepts its fans breached the rules, but says Ajax fans should also be punished for homophobic chants during the same game. By rejecting the fine it wants to force a disciplinary hearing where it can air its grievances.

‘This can’t be justified to our supporters,’ director of football Marcel Brands said. ‘I think that if you take a decision like this, you’re applying double standards.

‘We got a report from the KNVB with a minute-by-minute breakdown. PSV got a punishment and a fine. On the other side, nothing. They didn’t even carry out a preliminary investigation.’

The chants by PSV fans were also the reason Amsterdam’s mayor, Femke Halsema, banned travelling fans from last weekend’s Eredivisie match between the clubs in the Johan Cruyff Arena. PSV nevertheless won a bad-tempered match 2-1 to go top of the league.
