One man given seven years in jail for Majorca bar fight death
One of the young men accused of the fatal attack on a fellow Dutch holidaymaker in Majorca last year has been jailed for seven years for causing his death.
Sanil B was found guilty of attacking Carlo Heuvelman during a night out on the holiday island, but two others, Mees T and Hein B, were cleared of involvement in his death because of a lack of evidence. T
They were, however, jailed for 30 months for their role in the fighting.
Heuvelman, 27, died after being kicked repeatedly in the head during a brawl which broke out in July 2021 over a bar stool. He fell into a coma and died later in hospital.
The case was moved to the Netherlands at the request of the Spanish authorities because the victim and all nine defendants are Dutch.
Five other men involved in the fight were sentenced to between 12 and 30 months in jail, with part of the time suspended. All the suspects, who range in age from 18 to 20, had admitted taking part in the brawl but insist they did not attack Heuvelman.
‘The signal being sent out to the suspects and others is that this sort of pointless and extreme group violence will be punished severely,’ the court said.
The suspects, from Hilversum, were staying in a villa on the island at the time. All but one of them fled to the Netherlands after the incident, except for one who was holding the key to the rental property.
