Woman injured in De Pijp stabbing incident
Amsterdam police on Wednesday arrested a suspect in the stabbing of a women on a busy street near the Pijp’s Albert Cuyp Market in what they called a domestic incident.
A police spokesman said the stabbing happened inside a local building and continued out on the street. The man involved remains in custody and the woman is still in hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Employees of the Burgerbar on the corner of Govert Flinckstraat and Eerste van der Helststraat told Dutch media they saw a young woman believed to be in her twenties bleeding profusely from a wound near her shoulder and neck.
Eyewitnesses said she fell down in front of the restaurant’s door and was helped by bystanders, remaining conscious until an ambulance arrived. They told Dutch media they also saw a slightly older man with a knife. Bloody tea towels were reportedly still visible on the street an hour after the incident.
Last year, one person was killed and four others taken to hospital after a man armed with a knife carried out a string of random stabbings also in Amsterdam’s De Pijp.
