Femke Bol sets sights on unique double after surging to 400m gold
Sprinter Femke Bol is on course for a unique double at the European Athletics Championships after cruising to victory in the 400m in Munich.
The 22-year-old improved her own national record in Wednesday’s final to 49.44 seconds, half a second ahead of Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek.
Another Pole, Anna Kielbasinska, took bronze in 50.29 seconds, while Lieke Klaver, who was seen as a contender for a medal, finished sixth after being drawn in the outside lane.
If Bol adds the 400m hurdles title on Friday evening, she will be the first female athlete to win both events at a major championship. She is also expected to take part in the 4x400m relay at the weekend.
The Dutch team has made a strong start to the championships, with Jessica Schilder taking gold and Jorinde van Klinken winning bronze in the women’s shot put, while Nienke Brinkman won a bronze medal in the women’s marathon.
