A man has been shot dead on the roof of a metro station in Rotterdam.

Police responded to reports of shots being fired at Coolhaven station at 9.45pm on Sunday, but emergency services were unable to save the victim and he died at the scene.

Police would not give precise details of what happened, but local broadcaster Rijnmond quoted witnesses saying a dark-coloured car drove away immediately after the shooting.

Nobody has been arrested so far. Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

The Pieter de Hooghbrug bridge was closed in the aftermath of the shooting and train services between Coolhaven and Schiedam have been suspended.

In a separate incident on Sunday, two people were arrested after a car was shot at in Schiedam.

The shooting followed an argument at a set of traffic lights on Dorpsweg at around 2.30pm. The 33-year-old man driving the car was unharmed.

Police arrested two men, both aged 35, from Oud-Beijerland and Schiedam, two hours later and confiscated a weapon.
