Feyenoord, PSV and PEC Zwolle’s football stadiums are to be fitted with special technology aimed at helping track down and stopping fans who shout racist or discriminatory comments at players in the coming season.

The three experiments stem from a report on racism among fans which was drawn up following the chanting directed at Excelsior player Ahmad Mendes Moreira by Den Bosch supporters in 2019.

The Feynoord stadium will be equipped with both cameras and recording devices in an effort to trap racist chanters in the act. The PSV stadium will have systems which note changes in sound, such as racist chants, while at PEC Zwolle, technology such as machine learning and AI will be used to improve personal safety.

Sports minister Conny Helder said in a statement that discrimination has no place in sport. ‘Everyone, players, volunteers and spectators, should be able to enjoy sports and exercise unhindered and in a safe environment,’ she said.

The sports and culture ministry has allocated €1 million for the experiments.
