Most of the Netherlands’ regional economies have survived the coronavirus pandemic so far relatively unscathed, according to new figures from statistics agency CBS.

The economy grew across most of the country in the third quarter of this year, compared to two years ago. However, Haarlemmermeer, which includes Schiphol airport, declined by 9%. The CBS said the slump was due to the downturn in aviation and knock-on effect on related industries.

Another region in the red zone was Groningen, where the decision to wind down the production of natural gas was the main reason for a 2% contraction.

Nationwide, the Dutch economy grew 2.3% in the third quarter of 2021, compared with 2019. Areas with lots of industry, such as IJmond, where the Tata Steelworks is located, grew the most, the CBS said.

In Amsterdam, the economy declined 8% in the second quarter but recovered in the third and is now effectively back to pre-coronavirus levels.
