Plus and Coop to merge, creating third biggest supermarket group
Cooperatives Plus and Coop plan to merge, creating the third-biggest supermarket group in the country, the two companies said on Monday.
The new combine, which will operate under the name Plus, will have 550 stores and account for around 10% of the Dutch market. Albert Heijn is market leader with 35%, followed by Jumbo with 21%.
Coop director Fred Bosch said the merger is the result of changes in the ‘strongly competitive and consolidating market’.
The merger must first be approved by the Dutch competition authority and the two cooperatives’ members.
