Dutch gold medal hopeful In Mathieu van der Poel has pulled out of the cross country mountain bike title fight after a serious fall.

The Dutchman went over the handlebars in a tricky part of the track known as Sakura Drop. Although he got back on his bike and carried on, he pulled out after the fifth round, complaining of back trouble.

Van der Poel, who wore the Tour de France yellow jersey for six days this summer, had been a key contender for the gold medal.
