Arno Kamminga has won his second silver swimming medal of the Olympics – this time in the 200 metres breast stroke. Kamminga, who took silver in the 100 metres earlier in the week, led for much of the race but finished just a fraction behind Australia’s Izaac Stubblety-Cook.

‘This race is about eight men and eight men can win,’ Kamminga told reporters after the event. ‘I am very happy to be going home with silver.

Elsewhere there was disappointment for the Dutch rowers when Marieke Keijser and Ilse Paulis took bronze in the lightweight double sculls after leading for almost all the race.

The Dutch duo were heading for the third Netherlands’ gold but came to a standstill just before the finishing line after a missed stroke, allowing Italy and France to move ahead.

‘I don’t know what went wrong, but what does it matter,’ Paulis told reporters after the match. ‘We were the best and that is what it feels like.’

Other events

Dutch hockey players are again in action on Thursday, with the women taking on Britain in a replay of the Rio 2016 gold medal match at midday Dutch time.

Earlier on Thursday, the men’s team managed a draw against Britain and will progress to the quarter finals.

Other events to watch out for include BMX cycling, a spectacular sport and one in which Niek Kimmann, Twan van Gendt and Laura Smulders are seen as serious contenders. All three have made it through to the semi-finals.
