Dutch athletes in Tokyo face tougher coronavirus rules after infections
There were no more overnight medals for Dutch athletes taking part in the Olympic games in Tokyo, although Rachel Klamer finished a noteworthy fourth in the triathlon.
But Dutch athletes do now face more restrictions because, despite the safety protocols, coronavirus has been identified in six members of the Dutch contingent.
The six – four athletes and two rowing coaches – are no longer allowed to use the communal lounge in the Olympic village and will have to spend more time in their rooms, mission chief Pieter van den Hoogenband told a press conference on Tuesday morning.
The six affected by coronavirus have been moved to the quarantine hotel in Tokyo where they have been confined to rooms with no access to fresh air, Maurits Hendriks, technical director of the NOC*NSF, told reporters.
‘They have lost their Olympic dream and now have to live in poor conditions,’ he said. ‘It is all extremely unfortunate, and that is putting it mildly.’
Same flight
Six of the seven Dutch nationals diagnosed with coronavirus – the seventh is a journalist – were on the same KLM flight from Amsterdam, a regular flight with a mix of Olympians and ordinary passengers.
Athletes from Ecuador, India and Chile were also on board.
The KLM crew were not tested for coronavirus before departure, because that is not a requirement of either the Dutch or Japanese authorities, the AD said in a reconstruction of the flight.
The source of the Dutch infection has not yet been traced.
