National grid company Liander has warned that the electricity network in two parts of the Amsterdam area is reaching its maximum capacity and that the company is going flat out to increase it.

‘Only then can we meet the needs of major users such as supermarkets, large restaurants, offices and factories which want to locate here or which need more electricity,’ the company said on Thursday.

The situation is also an issue in Heerenveen and northern parts of Nijmegen. The problems are being caused by the shift towards digitalization and new housing construction, as well as green energy generation, Liander said.

One company planning to expand its distribution centre in Amsterdam’s western harbour area has already been told there is not enough capacity to make this an option, the Parool reported.

The capacity problems do not have any impact on consumers or the generation of green power using solar panels and wind turbines, Liander said.

Amsterdam city council said in response to the shortage of capacity that it is urging the next cabinet to invest more in the national grid.
