Average coronavirus infections below 3,000 for first time in eight months
The average number of coronavirus cases over the past week has fallen below 3,000 per day for the first time in eight months, latest figures show.
The public health agency reported 2,134 new infections on Monday morning, 24% fewer than last Monday. The average figure for the last week is 2,968, 26% lower than a week ago.
The number of people being treated in hospital for Covid-19 was unchanged at 1,327, while 477 are in intensive care, nine fewer than on Sunday. Hospital numbers tend to decline faster towards the end of the week because fewer patients are discharged at the weekend.
Two more people were confirmed to have died of coronavirus infections, bringing the seven-day average down from 14 to 10 in the past week.
The virus is also continuing to decline in nursing homes, with 96 locations reporting new infections in the past two weeks, compared to 116 seven days ago.
