Lockdowns and closed shops led the Dutch to save more in 2020

The halt on holidays and eating out helped Dutch households to add €42bn to their savings accounts last year, the central bank said on Friday.
The figure is double the amount saved in 2019 and four times the 2018 total, the central bank said.
‘Disposable incomes for most households remained intact thanks to the government support, while lockdowns and economic uncertainty led to sharp drop in spending,’ the bank said.
The savings increase took the national total to €487bn, or the equivalent of €60,000 per household.
