Seven homes in Rotterdam have been damaged by an overnight explosion, possibly caused by a hand grenade, local news website Rijnmond said.

The blast took place on the Kronenburg in the southern Rotterdam district of Charlois at around 2.45am. The explosion damaged windows in the nearby properties but no one was injured and residents were not required to leave their homes, a police spokesman said.

A number of cars parked outsides were also damaged.

A forensic examination of the scene is currently underway and police have appealed for anyone with a dashcam or surveillance equipment to come forward.
