One of the Netherlands most notorious jihadi brides is on the point of returning to the Netherlands after managing to make her way to the Dutch embassy in Turkey with her son, the AD said on Friday.

Angela B, a Dutch convert, is said to have recruited other young women to go to Syria. She left the Netherlands at the age of 19 in 2014, and married a Portuguese jihadi who was later killed, before marrying again.

The AD says B remained in IS-controlled parts of Syria for as long as possible, and ended up in a prison camp in the north east of the country, with dozens of other foreign women.

This summer, a group of Dutch women managed to escape from the camp, some of whom went to Idlib while others tried to make their way back to the Netherlands.

The AD says several other jihadi brides have returned to the Netherlands in recent months, most of whom have been sentenced to 2.5 years in jail. B, however, is likely to face a longer spell in prison because of her role in recruiting other women, including three teenagers.

In addition, unlike the other women, B has not publicly denounced IS and was not part of last year’s court case brought by a group of 23 women who want the Dutch government to campaign for their release, the paper said.

In June, the Supreme Court said the Dutch state does not have to bring either the 23 women who joined jihadi movements in Syria or their 56 children back to the Netherlands.

The government has said it will not actively try to bring Dutch nationals back because it is too dangerous for civil servants to make the trip. The issue has divided the cabinet and both the VVD and CDA are opposed to bringing back the children, most of whom are under the age of 6.
