Man dies in Amsterdam police custody after becoming unwell in a cell
A man has died in police custody in Amsterdam after he was arrested for causing a disturbance at a restaurant in the west of the city.
Police say they were called to the restaurant after the man, who was showing signs of ‘disturbed behaviour’ began harassing diners. One officer was injured while trying to arrest the man, who managed to break the handcuffs which had been put on him, police said in a statement.
The man was taken to holding cells in Nieuw-West where he ‘became unwell’. He was taken to hospital but efforts to revive him failed.
At the moment it is unclear why the man died or what caused him to become unwell. The death is now being investigated by officials from the national police force.
In August, Amsterdam police shot dead a German man who was armed with a knife and also acting in a ‘confused manner’ during an attempt to arrest him.
