A primary school in Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam, has closed it doors until after the summer holidays because of a coronavirus outbreak.

Two parents and one child are known to have the virus and two teachers are waiting at home for the results of a test. Last week a teacher, a parent and a pupil tested positive.

‘We would have preferred to keep the school open for the last few weeks, but we think safety should come first,’ Rien Wiegeraad, of the Un1iek school group, said. ‘But we are doing all we can to keep in touch with all our children to make sure they have the resources to follow lessons.’

The decision to close the school was taken together with the local health board.

Meanwhile, local broadcaster Omroep West also reported on Tuesday that four classes at a primary school in The Hague have been sent home after one teacher and four members of the same family – two children and two parents – tested positive for Covid-19.

Primary schools reopened in mid-May after being closed since March 16, at the start of the pandemic.
