Six Dutch ministries are involved in behind the scenes talks to draw up a coronavirus tourism protocol for the Netherlands, the Telegraaf said on Wednesday, quoting sources in The Hague.

Officials from the justice, home affairs, foreign affairs, health, infrastructure and economic affairs ministries are taking part in the talks, which aim to draw up safe ways to deal with tourism once borders open up again.

The protocol will cover procedures to tackle too many visitors turning up in Amsterdam and the seaside resort of Scheveningen. In particular, officials are considering setting up different rules for visitors from outside the EU, the paper said.

Italy is opening its borders to Schengen country visitors from June 3, Greece will welcome tourists from June 15 and Spain is hoping to do the same from early July.

‘Public safety is, of course, paramount,’ Jos Vranken, head of the Dutch tourist board NBTC, told Radio 1 news. ‘But if there are possibilities we would welcome them. The tourist industry has been hard hit.’
