First snow of the winter falls in the south, but it won’t be around for long

The south and east of the Netherlands was hit by the first snowfall of this winter on Wednesday, when fields turned white and there were slippery conditions on some roads.

The A27 between Breda and Oosterhout was closed for a time after a lorry skidded on snow-covered roads and the KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland and Overijssel.

The snow that has fallen is set to melt quickly during the day. However, the KNMI said there may be more wintry showers overnight and on Thursday sleet and rain will also spread into the west.

The overnight temperature will also drop closer to zero, making problems on the roads more likely.

The rest of the week and weekend will be unsettled, with rain and sunny spells and temperatures of around 8 Celsius during the day.
