Cash cows? Local authorities raise €50m through tax on dogs
Just over half of the Netherlands’ 380 local authorities have a tax on dogs and together they expect to raise over €50m this year, the national statistics agency CBS said on Tuesday.
The most expensive dog licence is in Groningen, where your pooch will cost you €129.60 a year. If you have two, the second dog costs €192 and a third €259.20.
The cheapest location is West Maas en Waal in Gelderland where your dog will cost you €18.59 a year.
The Hague is almost as expensive as Groningen and is the only one of the big five cities which still has a dog tax. The city raises some €2m a year through its levy on pet owners.
A handful of towns, including Hengelo and Veldhoven, still require dogs to wear a disc showing that the tax has been paid.
There are an estimated 1.5 million dogs in the Netherlands.
