Dutch conductor’s European anthem heads UK hit list
A version of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy by Dutch conductor André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra is topping various hit lists in the UK as Britain heads for Brexit.
Ode to Joy is the official European anthem, and Remain campaigners had called on supporters to download the track en masse.
With one day to go before the UK leaves the EU, Rieu’s live version of the final movement from Beethoven’s Symphony Number 9 has topped the iTunes UK Singles Chart and the Amazon hit list.
Brexiteers are in second place in both charts with their chart hopeful 17 million F*** Offs by comedian Dominic Frisby.
André Rieu, who appropriately enough is based in Maastricht, has not yet commented on his surprise chart success.
The track does not yet feature in the official UK Top 40 which is based on official sales of sales of downloads, CD, vinyl, audio streams and video streams. The latest official chart will be published later on Thursday.
