Bike theft is the most common crime in Amsterdam, with more than 8,000 reported stolen so far this year, according to an analysis of police crime figures by broadcaster RTL Nieuws and quoted by AT5.

In total, 8,316 police reports had been made about stolen bikes and light mopeds by the end of October, compared with 11,290 in 2018 as a whole.

Theft from cars is the second most common crime in the Dutch capital, with 4,562 cases. Vandalism was in third place.

The survey results also indicate there has not been a major rise in drugs and weapons-related crime, RTL said, while the number of burglaries has gone down sharply.

The RTL survey suggests a rise in crime in both Rotterdam and The Hague this year, while in Utrecht, theft from vehicles is the most common offence.
