Performances abroad by Dutch DJs are expected to generate €150m in exports this year and dance music now accounts for 75% of music exports, according to a new report by ING economists and radio station 538.

The export value of the Dutch dance scene has tripled over the past five years, although growth is now levelling off, the researchers say.

‘Dutch djs have accounted for half or more of the top 10 DJs worldwide for the past seven years,’ the report said. ‘And three of the top 10 big earners are Dutch –  Tiësto, Martin Garrix and Armin van Buuren. DJs earn a lot because top level performances are rare, dance music is popular and DJs have low production costs.’

The report was published on Wednesday, the start of the 24th edition of Amsterdam Dance Event, a five day programme of debates and performances across the city.

In total, 400,000 people are expected to attend one or more events in connection with the ADE. Some 2,500 artists will perform at 200 venues and no fewer than 600 speakers will take part in the conference itself.
