Dutch keeper Sari van Veenendaal is best female goalie in the world
Sari van Veendendaal has been named Fifa’s best female football keeper in the world at a glittering ceremony in Milan on Monday night.
Van Veenendaal, who was also named best keeper of this year’s World Cup, said in her acceptance speech that the trophy belonged to the entire team. The Netherlands lost the final to the US.
After the World Cup Van Veenendaal, who was without a club after leaving Arsenal, moved to Atletico Madrid.
The men’s prize went to Lionel Messi. Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk was among the nominees.
‘The people who vote made a decision and you have to accept it. As players you can’t compare me and Messi because it’s totally different. I’m very proud to be here,’ Van Dijk said after the ceremony.
