Dutch railway company NS is to start experiments with advertising on intercity trains.  Adverts will appear on the carriage video screens in 140 of the 400 intercity trains, a spokesman confirmed, following a report in Monday’s Volkskrant.

The adverts will not be at the expense of travel information and ads will only appear once every five minutes, the state-owned railway company said. Ads will have a maximum reach of five million people.

An NS spokesman told broadcaster NOS: ‘The adverts will tie in with our brand. They will not be about actual things, but adverts which will appeal to a large group of people.’

Passenger reactions will be assessed at the end of this year.
