Murderer of Anne Faber to be jailed for 28 years, appeal court confirms
A convicted sex offender who raped and murdered a young woman who was cycling nearby a clinic where he was undergoing treatment, will serve another 28 years in jail with psychiatric treatment.
Michael P, who was sentenced for killing 25-year-old Anne Faber in Utrecht in 2017, has had his sentence confirmed on appeal. He is also liable to pay damages to Faber’s family.
The appeal court judge accused the man of ‘cold and calculated actions’ which ‘had a huge impact on her relatives’, even though his criminal responsibility was slightly diminished due to his psychological issues.
He had admitted the killing but denied it was premeditated.
The murder was hugely controversial because P had been undergoing treatment in a clinic in preparation for his return to society after serving several years in jail for rape and robbery.
The clinic was not aware he had been jailed for sex crimes because he had refused to allow the prison to pass on information, and he had only been treated for aggression and drugs abuse, according to a justice inspectors’ report.
Faber’s family had demanded that the 29-year-old man spend his life in jail but this sentence was not requested by the prosecution – according to the NOS broadcaster – because he would have had a chance of being freed after 25 years without treatment.
