Foreign nationals in the Netherlands have just one more day to register to vote in the May 23 European elections, if they want to vote here rather than in their home country.

Registration has been a requirement since 1999 but many people are apparently unaware that they have to fill in a special form to make sure they receive a voting pass. The voting registers close on April 9.

Elections for the European parliamentary elections take place in the Netherlands on May 23, although the results will not be revealed until the following Sunday.

The Netherlands currently has 26 MEPs, but that will go up to 29 after Britain leaves the EU. The Christian Democrats are the biggest Dutch grouping, with five MEPs. The anti-EU PVV and the liberal Democratic party D66 both have four.

This year, the nationalist Forum voor Democratie, which is also opposed to the EU, is poised to emerge as the biggest party, polls suggest.

Amsterdam city council on Friday updated its online information about voting in the European elections to make sure British nationals are aware they have the right to vote, whatever happens about Brexit.

The Hague has also sent a new letter to all British nationals in the city, explaining that they can vote in EU elections and enclosing a new form to sign up for the voting register.

The Dutch electoral council Kiesraad confirmed last week that British nationals will be able to vote in the May 23 European elections, even if Britain has withdrawn from the EU before that date.
