Dutch Oscar hopeful is WWII true story ‘Bankier van het Verzet’
World War II drama Bankier van het Verzet (the resistance’s banker) is the Dutch entry for next February’s Oscars. The film, directed by Joram Lursen, follows the true story of Dutch banker and resistance hero Walraven van Hall.
During the Nazi occupation, Walraven and his brother developed various complex ways to finance the resistance, including ‘robbing’ the central bank, with the approval of the Dutch government in exile. He is played in the film by Barry Atsma, his brother Gijs by Jacob Derwig.
The film has been nominated for no less than 12 Golden Calf awards – the main Dutch film awards – which will be presented on October 5. The film will also be included in Netflix’ global line-up.
