Most jobless builders have quit the sector, just 15% are back for the boom
Turnover in the Dutch construction sector grew 15% in the second quarter of this year, but the industry is still suffering from major staff shortages, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.
New figures show that just 15% of the 230,000 people who lost their jobs due to the economic crisis of 2008 have returned to the building trade, either as builders or in managerial roles and administration.
At the end of the June, there were 16,300 vacant jobs in the construction sector, the highest number in just under 10 years. At the same time, development is picking up speed.
The CBS says building permits with a total value of €4.4bn were granted during April to June period, a rise of 10% on a year ago.
