Groningen student society under fire again over injury to members
The board of student association Vindicat in Groningen will not get any financial compensation from the university this academic year, following a second incident in which a student was injured.
Universities in the Netherlands pay a stipend to students who give up a year of their studies to run fraternities.
Funding was withdrawn from the Vindicat board last year following several incidents but would have resumed if there were no more problems. However, this latest case which took place in December, means the board members will not now get paid.
Each board member is entitled to up to €2,265, or €440.20 per month.
Two Vindicat students face prosecution for the December incident, which resulted in a third student developing concussion.
In November, a 24-year-old member of Vindicat was given 240 hours community service for his role in an earlier initiation ceremony that left a fellow student with a serious head injury.
That incident prompted calls for initiation rituals at Dutch university societies to be better monitored or banned. Three Amsterdam students ended up in hospital two years ago after swimming in canals or sleeping rough among the bins in order to join a society.
