The Netherlands poised to strip jihadi of his Dutch nationality: minister

Acting justice minister Stef Blok is poised to strip a dual citizen of his Dutch nationality, making use of new special powers to combat terrorism for the first time, he told parliament in a written answer to MPs questions.

Blok had been asked about claims that Britain has stripped 150 jihadis of their British nationality.

The minister’s statement did not give any more details about the case, including the other nationality the person holds. The law can only be applied to dual nationals to avoid rendering people stateless. By removing Dutch nationality, the man will not be able to return legally to the Netherlands, Blok said.

In March the minister’s powers to strip people of their Dutch nationality were expanded to include people who have not been found guilty of a criminal offence but are a threat to society. In this case, however, the man has been convicted of terrorist offences, Dutch media said.

Blok told MPs that files are also being prepared on number of people who have not yet been convicted of a crime.
