The Netherland needs to put aside €20 million more to care for people with severe handicaps, says the VGN carers’ organisation.

It has written to junior health secretary Martin van Rijn asking for an urgent injection of funds to support these services in the next 18 months.

It said care for people from the age of two to 55, who have developmental ages of up to 24 months, is ‘seriously inadequate’ and ‘generates tension for the whole family.’

It warns that the situation is becoming untenable as the number of Dutch people with severe handicaps has risen from 6,000 to more than 8,000.
